According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), New Year’s Day is the year’s deadliest day for alcohol-related fatalities.

As we all prepare to ring in the New Year, it’s a good time to send out some reminders on how to ensure your safety to make it to 2013. AAA has also announced its support of ignition interlocks for all convicted DUI offenders. Research has shown that ignition interlock devices (IID) are a proven way to save lives, and AAA recommends these be required for all convicted DUI offenders.

For those that have been clear and clean on their driving record, preventing drinking and driving is still a shared responsibility to save lives. Do your due diligence on New Year’s Eve by planning ahead and designating a non-drinking driver, and never get behind the wheel even if you’ve only had one drink. The same goes for being a passenger: don’t step into a car even if the driver only had one drink.

If you’re driving safely and encounter an impaired driver on the road, keep a safe distance and ask a passenger to call 911 – or pull over to a safe location to make the call yourself.
